My goal is for every guest to feel seen, heard, accepted, and connected
2025: Dream, Repose
Repose: “A state of rest, sleep, or tranquility”
Did you know that insufficient sleep (less than 6 hours per night) has been shown to lower thresholds for anaphylaxis, and increase sIgE levels, in atopic bodies? (source) This means that for people living with anaphylactic allergies, the amount and quality of sleep they receive is directly tied to their physical health and wellbeing.
The 2025 retreat will center around all things sleep, restfulness, and relaxation, as our mental and physical health are intricately intertwined.
Sleep is a pillar of good health
The 2025 retreat is all about physical and mental repose; learn different methods of achieving calm and peace, in a welcoming and open-hearted environment where you are free to be yourself without hesitation.

-
Guided Meditation Workshop
Crystal Samuels, of @DareToFlowWithMe will lead guests on a calming guided meditation. She will teach us practical ways to use meditation in our daily lives, which can be a powerful tool when experiencing food allergy anxiety. Crystal has an incredibly soothing voice and demeanor that is sure to have us all sinking into our chairs.
-
Breathwork Workshop
Ada Garza of Love.Alchemy.Life, will lead us through a breathwork workshop to learn how to better center our energy, calm our body, and channel our breath in an effective way. Ada will introduce us to practices such as Diaphragmatic Breathing, Box Breathing, and more, as well as Progressive Muscle Relaxation. Ada offers a nurturing space where individuals can reconnect with their true selves and learn to navigate the challenges of life with greater emotional resilience.
-
Sleep is a Pillar of Good Health
Dr Payel Gupta and Kortney Kwong Hing, of The Itch Podcast, will host a live podcast recording all about sleep. Their episode, “The Importance of Sleep and Allergies”, inspired the theme for this retreat. They will do a deep dive on how sleep impacts people with Atopic Conditions (food allergies, eczema, and asthma), and expand upon the original episode with new considerations and information.
-
Self Advocacy Workshop
How you communicate your food allergies to others matters. Actor and Marketer, Karrie Kwong, will lead a refreshed version of her much-loved communication workshop. Guests will get to act out new scenarios, consider how to improve their verbal and nonverbal communication, and learn about self-advocacy from the experiences of others in the room.
-
Work/School/Life Balance with Food Allergies
Amanda will step out of her comfort zone as event host, and lead a personal talk about the challenges, successes, and learnings she has gathered in her years of managing school and work alongside food allergies. She will share a series of previously untold personal stories to illuminate the realities of living with atopic conditions as an adult out there in the world.
-
Youth Session - Anxiety Coping Strategies
Teens have a lot on their plate by nature of emerging as young adults, but add food allergies on top of that, and things get complicated. Navigating reaction anxiety, social anxiety about one’s food allergies, and the stress of treatment (for some), can be a lot to manage. Youth Mental Health Worker, and certified Social Service Worker, Ashley Orlando, will host a practical session for youths to learn proven and useful coping strategies for dealing with food allergy anxiety. With a husband who has food allergies, she knows first-hand what it’s like to navigate life as the partner of an allergic adult.
-
Youth Session - This Is What Dreams are Made Of
Led by Kyle Dine, influencer, musician, and founder of Equal Eats. When we sleep, we dream. What do you dream of? Do you ever let your food allergies hold you back from the idea of pursuing what you are most passionate about in life? We often think “I can’t” when we view our food allergies as an impossible hurdle. The casual and open format of this session is intended to get the youths talking about what they envision for themselves, how they want to grow, and how not to let their food allergies stand in the way of achieving their dreams. Kyle is a trailblazer who has carved out his own unique path in life, and lives the ethos of this workshop.
-
Life in Food Allergy Treatment - For Virtual Ticket Holders
Sarah Danna, also known as @sarahandspices, is an adult going through the Food Allergy Institute’s treatment program. In this virtual Q&A, she and Amanda will discuss what life is like in treatment, strategies she has learned for managing the logistics of treatment, and how she remains calm and centered while facing her allergens head-on.
Rise & Shine VIP Day
And you thought the main retreat sounded relaxing…
The VIP Day is an ethereal extension of the state of repose we will have entered the day prior. In other words, we are going get deeply relaxed, unwound, and creative. And then we’ll all have coffee and snacks together and have an open and intimate chat about whatever everyone wants to talk about. It’s an ideal way to close such an impactful weekend, and there are only 15 tickets available.
-
ASMR Restorative Yoga
Tammy and Maisha, of TinglesBar, will lead guests through a restorative yoga session accompanied by ASMR. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a term used to describe a deeply pleasant, soothing, and sometimes sleepy feeling that occurs in response to distinct audiovisual stimuli and personal attention.
Induced by a variety of “triggers”, this static-like and tingling sensation usually begins at the scalp, travels down the back of the neck, along the spine, and throughout the limbs – a full-body current of relaxation.
-
Dream Creations
Bianca Lee will lead an art therapy session that will focus on our cultivating our passions, pursuing our dreams, and not letting food allergies stand in the way of doing what we want with our lives.
A dreamy new product drop

What people are saying
-
"The FTBM retreat was such a positive experience! My boyfriend (who has food allergies) and I attended and we found great comfort in being surrounded by other individuals in the food allergy community for a weekend who simply just get it. In addition, knowing that we could BOTH eat freely while at the retreat for an entire weekend was really special. "
Dakota
-
"I loved this retreat, it was great to be welcomed into this burgeoning community!"
Brian

"There is just so much to love about the FTBM Food Allergy Retreat! It's so nice to be surrounded by people with allergies who get all the hardships of the experience. The retreat is planned so well. While we might start off a little nervous, the various workshops and activities really put you at ease and the friendships made there are unmatched. Plus, I adore Toronto and found it to be a very allergy friendly city. This retreat has been a highlight of my year two years in a row now! "
Jess C
-
"This retreat offers a unique experience of nourishing the wellbeing of those of us with food allergies, while at the same time building a strong and supportive community whose connections last far beyond the retreat. After attending each retreat, I come away feeling more capable of managing my food allergies and feel so thankful to learn from others who are navigating food allergies just like me. Thank you for creating this safe space that honours the experience of life with food allergies! "

"Once again I loved attending the only event of the year that I don’t need Purse Snacks for. Catching up with old friends and meeting new people was wonderful, the sponsor snacks were great (I loved them last year but thought this year’s were even better), the activities were interesting and well-planned and the sessions were all great. I loved that some people were hard-core dressed on theme and some people opted out. It was definitely an event where doing what worked for you was embraced and appreciated. The decor was great, and lunch was excellent (and I definitely found myself regretting that I hadn’t opted in for Sunday’s session also because the sound bath sounded awesome)."
Kate

"What a wonderful event for the allergy community to come together, connect, and build relationships. "
Bethany

"The Free to Be Me retreat was a wonderful break and an opportunity for learning in a safe environment with supportive folks who just get it about food allergies. I learned lots, found community, enjoyed good food, and felt inspired to continue learning and advocating for myself and my community. "
Emily

"Thank you for spending the time to intentionally create such an inclusive and restoring space for us to gather!"

"Amanda and her team did it again. This year's theme was spot on. The workshops were engaging and breakout sessions were thoughtful and interesting. I am grateful opportunities like this exist."
Stacey

"The power of community and solidarity in a share experience should never be underestimated! It is so genuinely lovely to spend time with others who “get” you. Additionally, I loved being able to share openly and honestly about lived experiences and how food allergies are seen and represented outside of our immediate community. So empowering!"
Felicity

"A wonderful weekend of support, community, and sharing!"
Kyle

"The retreat was absolutely fantastic. It was so nice to see returning familiar faces AND meet a bunch of new friends too! The sessions were welcoming, calming, and helpful for a variety of reasons - some new information and lots of opportunities to take time to reflect on and consider things that we just don't take time for in daily life but was so beneficial!"

"Free to Be Me is a unique and creative event, unlike any other for those living with food allergies. I enjoyed equally the thought-provoking sessions and spending the day with others who also live with multiple food allergies. The camaraderie was real."

"Once again, Amanda and the FTBM team have outdone themselves! I love that I feel so HEARD & SEEN at this retreat—less like a patient, and more like a whole person. When I attend other food allergy events, I always rave about what a magical experience it is in Toronto (which is itself very friendly to diverse diets and needs). Amanda truly understands the nuances of the food allergic experience, and I feel comfortable, safe, and most importantly, FREE when I am participating in workshops or dining at lunch. While the activities are fun, I make the trip because of the awesome people (& snacks) I get to connect with. My only real request is for more from the FTBM team!!!"

Traveling to Toronto
We are happy to welcome guests from all over North America, and beyond! 75% of attendees at the 2023 retreat traveled from the USA for this retreat, and several from western Canada, and we were so happy they joined us. This event is truly one of a kind, and fills a need for emotional connection (in person) within the food allergy community. In short, my goal was to make this an event worth traveling for.
Flying into Toronto:
YYZ - Pearson Airport is our international airport and is about a 25 minute cab or Uber/Lyft drive from the preferred hotel
YTZ - Billy Bishop Airport is our city airport that is quite literally located right at the foot of the downtown core. If you live in the northeast, there is a good chance you can fly into YTZ. They offer a bus service to Union Station, you can take the King St streetcar from YTZ to the preferred hotel, or you can take a 5 minute cab/Uber/Lyft ride.
Preferred Hotel: The Residence Inn by Marriott, 255 Wellington St W. A 20 minute walk, OR take the 504 King Streetcar to Tecumseth, followed by a 5 minute walk to the venue

"What a beautiful experience! It was so refreshing to be in a room with other people who share the same worries as I do. I felt free to share my vulnerability and garnered support. I am so happy to have a new allergy family!"
— Felicity
"I've been waiting for an event like this for YEARS in the States! With all the focus on medical research and advocacy, sometimes my individual experience as a person with food allergies gets lost in the shuffle. I am so glad that Amanda put this event together! I loved that the focus was less on my allergies than on *me* as a person. Also, Toronto was surprisingly affordable & food allergy-friendly, and I had a terrific time in the city!"
— Abigail
"This first Free to Be Me retreat was unlike any other food allergy focused event I’ve attended. The sense of community and compassion and understanding was constantly felt throughout. I left with a deeper understanding of my own needs and discovered through the workshops how to uncover the stress I carry and what to do to improve my daily life. It’s simple baby steps that can help me find my way to a happier outlook on the everyday. Thank you Amanda, well done💗"
— Janine
"Overall, this was a great retreat. It was my first time meeting other adults with allergies in person and it was nice to connect with people that really understand and respect this lifestyle because they are in it too. I loved the food, coffee, snacks and the snacks that I got to take home. "
— Genevieve
"Amanda and her team went above and beyond to make everyone feel safe and included. It was evident a lot of care and attention went into every detail from the safe snacks and meals to the terrific group sessions and guest speakers. Thank you for doing this for the allergy community, it was greatly appreciated. "
— Stacey
"A great space to feel belonged & understood! "
— Tara
"FTBM is a fantastic event that brings those with food allergies together in a safe environment. It allows those with food allergies to connect with others, building a sense of community. The food is also fantastic. "
— Rohan
"This event is a must attend and first of its kind! As someone living with severe food allergies for 27 years, I met the food allergy family here that I didn’t know I needed. Amanda and the amazing team went above and beyond to create an event that was engaging, safe, and intersectionally inclusive. We laughed, we cried, we learned, and we ate so well! I hope to see you there!"
— Alyssa
"The Free to Be Me conference was a wonderful, inclusive, and deeply heart-warming experience. As an adult with food allergies it can be hard to find a peer group. This conference provided that, and it was an incredible, joyful experience. "
— Kate
"I had a wonderful time at the retreat. It was great to meet people that completely understand your fears and the obstacles you face daily trying to protect your child and giving them the confidence to thrive as individuals. It really felt like a sense of community even though many have just met for the first time in person. Thank you so much Amanda for organizing this retreat. You are true inspiration to all of us within the Allergy community. "
— Jennifer
"I had the absolute pleasure of working with Amanda at her Free To Be Me retreat as the Friday night DJ and in facilitating the expressive arts therapy workshop on Saturday. When Amanda initially approached me with her idea of the retreat I knew she had something truly special up her sleeve, however witnessing it actually come to life totally exceeded what I could have EVER imagined. Amanda created such a beautifully inclusive, informative and safe space for participants living with anaphylactic food allergies. Her energy throughout the process was extremely grounding, kind and professional and I feel extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to have been part of this experience. I highly recommend working with Amanda in any capacity as she is a visionary and true innovator.”
— Bianca
"The food allergy wellness retreat was amazing!! I made the trip from California to Toronto and it was sooo worth it. Hanging out with other people with food allergies at this event was so healing. I felt so seen. 💙"
— Jessica
"Very fun to see other people with allergies and interact with them knowing that they have had to deal with the same struggles I have. It's very inclusive and a great place to go!"
— Aaron
"I think Amanda’s conference is unequivocally valuable to the food allergy community. There is nothing like being in a room full of people who understand food allergies, and I cannot wait to attend next year. "
— Michael
"This retreat was so well done! The sessions had a great balance of info, tips, and examples to put into practice. The pacing was good - there was time for everything and didn't seem rushed or drawn out. The food was delicious and the swag bag and samples were amazing! "
— Bethany
"The retreat was just the event my soul needed. It was refreshing, therapeutic, and just plain fun! I was cautiously optimistic when I booked my ticket to Toronto from Orlando, FL, but I am SO happy I did! I loved getting to meet so many allergy adults, kids, and advocates. This event took inclusion to a whole new level and everybody was seen and heard to their comfort levels. Amanda is a wonderful person who has thoughtfully designed this event for the allergy community. In my opinion, she dreamed up the perfect event and it’s truly a testament to her strength as an allergy adult. Definitely make a plan to come out annually! You will not be disappointed. <3 "

About The Organizer
Hey! I’m Amanda Orlando. I was diagnosed with eczema and multiple severe food allergies as a baby, so it’s the only life I have ever known. Sharing food allergy and eczema awareness has become my passion. I am the blogger behind @everydayallergenfree and the author of 3 food allergy cookbooks. I have appeared in numerous media outlets, such as CTV Your Morning, CBC Radio, Huffington Post Blog, VITA Mag, and Globe & Mail, to share allergy friendly recipes and awareness. I love mainstream food and wellness culture, but always felt I was watching from the outside. There was no wellness event that was catered to the needs of people like myself who have food allergies and eczema, so I decided to create one. Thanks to all who joined me for the inaugural Free To Be Me Food Allergy Retreat in 2023!
