What people are saying

  • "The FTBM retreat was such a positive experience! My boyfriend (who has food allergies) and I attended and we found great comfort in being surrounded by other individuals in the food allergy community for a weekend who simply just get it. In addition, knowing that we could BOTH eat freely while at the retreat for an entire weekend was really special. "

    Dakota

  • "I loved this retreat, it was great to be welcomed into this burgeoning community!"

    Brian

  • "There is just so much to love about the FTBM Food Allergy Retreat! It's so nice to be surrounded by people with allergies who get all the hardships of the experience. The retreat is planned so well. While we might start off a little nervous, the various workshops and activities really put you at ease and the friendships made there are unmatched. Plus, I adore Toronto and found it to be a very allergy friendly city. This retreat has been a highlight of my year two years in a row now! "

    Jess C

  • "This retreat offers a unique experience of nourishing the wellbeing of those of us with food allergies, while at the same time building a strong and supportive community whose connections last far beyond the retreat. After attending each retreat, I come away feeling more capable of managing my food allergies and feel so thankful to learn from others who are navigating food allergies just like me. Thank you for creating this safe space that honours the experience of life with food allergies! "

    Jess P

  • "Once again I loved attending the only event of the year that I don’t need Purse Snacks for. Catching up with old friends and meeting new people was wonderful, the sponsor snacks were great (I loved them last year but thought this year’s were even better), the activities were interesting and well-planned and the sessions were all great. I loved that some people were hard-core dressed on theme and some people opted out. It was definitely an event where doing what worked for you was embraced and appreciated. The decor was great, and lunch was excellent (and I definitely found myself regretting that I hadn’t opted in for Sunday’s session also because the sound bath sounded awesome)."

    Kate

  • "What a wonderful event for the allergy community to come together, connect, and build relationships. "

    Bethany

  • "The Free to Be Me retreat was a wonderful break and an opportunity for learning in a safe environment with supportive folks who just get it about food allergies. I learned lots, found community, enjoyed good food, and felt inspired to continue learning and advocating for myself and my community. "

    Emily

  • "Thank you for spending the time to intentionally create such an inclusive and restoring space for us to gather!"

    Claire

  • "Amanda and her team did it again. This year's theme was spot on. The workshops were engaging and breakout sessions were thoughtful and interesting. I am grateful opportunities like this exist."

    Stacey

  • "The power of community and solidarity in a share experience should never be underestimated! It is so genuinely lovely to spend time with others who “get” you. Additionally, I loved being able to share openly and honestly about lived experiences and how food allergies are seen and represented outside of our immediate community. So empowering!"

    Felicity

  • "A wonderful weekend of support, community, and sharing!"

    Kyle

  • "The retreat was absolutely fantastic. It was so nice to see returning familiar faces AND meet a bunch of new friends too! The sessions were welcoming, calming, and helpful for a variety of reasons - some new information and lots of opportunities to take time to reflect on and consider things that we just don't take time for in daily life but was so beneficial!"

    Anon

  • "Free to Be Me is a unique and creative event, unlike any other for those living with food allergies. I enjoyed equally the thought-provoking sessions and spending the day with others who also live with multiple food allergies. The camaraderie was real."

    Gwen

  • "Once again, Amanda and the FTBM team have outdone themselves! I love that I feel so HEARD & SEEN at this retreat—less like a patient, and more like a whole person. When I attend other food allergy events, I always rave about what a magical experience it is in Toronto (which is itself very friendly to diverse diets and needs). Amanda truly understands the nuances of the food allergic experience, and I feel comfortable, safe, and most importantly, FREE when I am participating in workshops or dining at lunch. While the activities are fun, I make the trip because of the awesome people (& snacks) I get to connect with. My only real request is for more from the FTBM team!!!"

  • I recently had a conversation with some friends about how incredibly special & affirming it is to have & surround yourself with queer and/or neurodivergent friend groups. We were talking about how there’s a complete sense of unmasking many parts of ourselves that we have learned to hide throughout our adult lives. Things that we have unfortunately been forced to do just to live and succeed in a very ableist society that does not take food allergies into consideration. And as much as I do feel that about my current queer and neurodivergent friends, I realized that I have that too; but with the complete life-changing sense of belonging & acceptance that overcame me and settled in my heart & soul from attending the Free To Be Me retreat two years in a row. It’s something that I’ve been unable to find the right words to express and almost leaves me speechless (very unlike me as I am constantly talking!😂) It’s this sense of just being in a space where every single person around you just KNOWS. Knows the daily trauma I’ve carried around day to day from my painful childhood memories feeling excluded & like a burden because of my food allergies. Knows the seemingly invisible intense anxiety I experience where I am literally contemplating and imagining myself dying from a life-threatening allergic reaction. Knows the way being careful can turn into extreme OCD behaviors, just in a desperate attempt to keep myself safe. Knows the way people can be SO ableist and inconsiderate even if they are coming from good intentions, they end up saying things that are so offensive and rude because they are uncomfortable with the idea of severe food allergies🙄. And at the same time as all of these negative things we carry around, this community KNOWS that although we are all so much more than our food allergies, they are a huge part of our identity that do define us, but in an incredibly empowering way. That is the major mental switch I experienced both years at the retreat, suddenly feeling so powerful and like a true Food Allergy Warrior, and knowing everyone else was experiencing that too. And also the simple yet SO VALIDATING shared experience of just saying “F*ck terrible a**hole allergists!” and then cracking up for hours. 😂❤️💪🏻 This year, during one of the workshops, I found myself and everyone laughing so hard at all of us acting out scenarios in which people without food allergies can be so ridiculous and rude in day to day situations. I laughed so much that now I really want to create a Food Allergy comedy show where people with allergies all imitate the crazy people and situations we have encountered in our lives! And reconnecting with the incredible friends I met last year at the very first retreat, who have stayed in my life this whole past year through ups and downs including my first ever anaphylactic reaction. (You know who you are🥹) And then there’s brand new people that I instantly connected with this year & feel like I’ve known forever! 🥹❤️ The Free To Be Me retreat is absolutely life-changing and I know I will continue going every year till the day I die. I am forever unbelievably grateful to Amanda for creating this space & organizing everything for this retreat two years in a row. You are a pioneer, a queen, a warrior, one of my greatest inspirations, & a food allergy BADASS💪🏻 Thank you thank you thank you. 🥹🩵🥹🩵

Food Allergy Retreat 2024

The 2024 retreat theme is “Live from Toronto!”, and will center around all things media, and telling our own stories.

Think for a moment about the role of the media/social media in our lives as people with allergies, and the role of people with allergies in the media and on social media.

How do we respond to representations of food allergies? How do they make us feel, and do they impact our level of anxiety? How do we share our own stories online? How can we make ourselves heard? How can we reach a broader audience and the general public? The questions can go on and on… and that makes it a perfect theme for the second Free To Be Me food allergy wellness retreat.

The retreat, set up as a talk show of course, will feature keynote speakers Mia Silverman @theallergicgirl, a young adult with over 50 food allergies who has become a TikTok sensation, and Gwen Smith, Editor and Co-Owner of Allergic Living, the first and most prominent major media source for those living with food allergies. See below for the full lineup of workshops, breakout rooms, and keynote speakers.

At Free To Be Me, you will get an opportunity to unite with others who get it; imagine walking into a room where everyone is reading the ingredients label (probably twice). Build community, feel liberated, heard, and accepted. Bolster your self confidence, build greater appreciation for yourself and your ability to manage your allergic life, and leave feeling refreshed!

  • Live from Toronto... It's Friday Night!

    Mia Silverman

Mia is a young adult who has risen to TikTok fame with her raw and real posts about living with 50+ food allergies as a young adult living and going to school in NYC.

  • Morning and Afternoon Calm + Soothing Affirmations

    Amanda Orlando

Your host, Amanda, will guide you through soft spoken, calming affirmations and gentle seated movements to provoke greater awareness of our bodies and minds, to be present in the moment, and to think calmly and clearly; all important strategies for those living with allergies or who live with anxiety as a result of their allergic experiences.

  • Be Heard! Perfecting Our Communication

    Karrie Kwong

WHAT you say is just as important as HOW you say it! How we communicate our needs as people with food allergies has an impact on our everyday interactions with others. With over 13 years working in advertising, and years of experience as a professional actor and acting coach, Karrie understands good communication and how to hone one’s skills. She will engage guests in roleplay self-advocacy scenarios, and challenge us to improve our craft through vocal and physical exercises that build self awareness, confidence, and clarity.

  • Illustrate Joy

    Bianca Lee

Trauma-informed expressive arts facilitator and sound therapist, Bianca, will lead guests through a creative journaling and illustration session to spark joy and appreciation for ourselves and how we manage this allergic life. She will challenge guests to look inwards at our successes and personal growth on our unique food allergy journeys, with an eye to promoting self confidence, and helping guests thrive! The session will involve a visual arts component, as well as group sharing and discussion.

  • Expressive Collaging

    Self-Guided

For guests who prefer a smaller group activity, because everyone’s comfort level is different. Guests will enter a peaceful space that is plentiful with collaging supplies, as well as prompts for how to create a collage that expresses your emotions towards specific aspects of allergy life. Guests will be welcome to enjoy this activity quietly, or to engage as a group; however they wish to spend their time.

Michael Sawers has a wealth of experience mentoring youth with food allergies through his involvement with Food Allergy Canada, as a member of their Youth Advisory Committee, and is a highly sought after mentor thanks to his welcoming demeanor and down-to-earth approach as a young adult with allergies himself. Kyle Dine, CEO and founder of Equal Eats, musician, keynote speaker, and food allergy adult, has educated over 1 million kids across 900 schools with his school assemblies about food allergy safety. Michael and Kyle will lead a group discussion for young guests, starting with a focus on navigating social media and anxiety, and opening up the conversation more broadly to navigating life as a young adult with allergies.

    Sarah Danna

Sarah, also known as @SarahandSpices, is a young adult and recent college graduate living her best life with food allergies, who shares her journey online with authenticity, positivity, and grace. Joelle has not let her restrictions hold her back! She’s an inspiration. Joelle and I will sit down for a Q&A to discuss her allergy and celiac story, the road to diagnosis, and her incredible career in media so far.

  • Q&A with Allergic Living Magazine’s Co-Owner and Editor

    Gwen Smith

Amanda will sit down with Gwen Smith, Co-Owner and Editor of Allergic Living Magazine for a Q&A about the magazine’s inception, Gwen’s personal story behind creating a media outlet that has become an institution, successfully pivoting in a changing media landscape, and how to write a good submission for those looking to share their story. Our media theme would not be complete without Gwen herself!

  • Reacting To That Reaction Scene

    Megan Crowley

How do you react to portrayals of allergic reactions in TV and movies? As people with food allergies we tend to have strong opinions about how allergic reactions, or the allergic person, is depicted in the media. It can elicit intense emotions. How do we address these scenes with our kids, or our partners, our friends, coworkers, and family? Megan Crowley, of Holis Collective, is a food allergy parent, registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, and is part of The Food Allergy Counsellor directory. She will lead a talk on reacting to depictions of food allergies in the media and how they make us feel, challenge us to look deeper into what these emotions may indicate in regards to our relationship with food allergies, and speak to how we can process these emotions, as well as time for a more general Q&A about the psychology of food allergies.

New! Rise & Shine, a Sunday morning restorative session, post-retreat

Some of the biggest takeaways from the inaugural retreat were that guests wanted more time to mingle, thought the retreat should be longer, and wanted to enjoy some form of relaxation. That’s how Rise & Shine (kind of like a VIP day) was created. Rise & Shine is a more intimate gathering for those who want to continue the experience and spend more time together in a relaxing and more intimate environment. Please note that there are only 30 spaces available for Rise & Shine, so get your ticket before they sell out!

Guests will arrive at the bright and airy IGD loft studio (a perfect finale to our media theme, we will be gathering in a studio that is ordinarily used for film projects and has hosted Matty Matheson, among other presenters, film crews, and musicians) on Sunday morning, greeted with a cozy fleece blanket that they can use to get comfortable during the 45 minute restorative sound bath session led by Bianca Lee. Following the relaxing sound bath, Amanda will share a cooking demo, and there will be a gelato cart from On Third Thought Gelato, a local, allergy aware gelato company. There will also be fresh fruit, drinks, and packaged snacks for guests to enjoy. Then everyone will gather in the main room of the studio to spill the tea on the retreat; guests will be encouraged to share their favorite memories, growth moments, further discussion topics, etc. It will be an open discussion in a welcoming environment. Finally, guests will have some time to socialize and take photos.

Guests are welcome to bring a yoga mat to Rise & Shine if they wish, to be used during the sound bath.

Your VIP ticket will get you:

  • Access to the Rise & Shine gathering at IGD Studios on June 2, 10am - 1pm

  • A cozy fleece blanket to be used during the sound bath and to take home with you, and additional swag from sponsors

  • Restorative sound bath led by Bianca Lee

  • Cooking demonstration led by Amanda Orlando

  • Dessert from On Third Thought Gelato
